Alexander Zverev achieved his career-high ranking of World No. 2 at a bittersweet moment. While his qualification into the semis and then World No. 1 Novak Djokovic‘s defeat in the quarter-finals ensured his ascension, he could not enjoy it much as he was in a hospital getting a surgery done having ruptured his tendon during his semi-final match at the 2022 French Open.
Up against eventual champion Rafael Nadal, the two had played for more than 3 hours and the second set was yet to conclude. Zverev had a good chance to wrap the second set but the Spaniard rallied back great to force a tiebreaker and the final point which ensured a tiebreaker saw Zverev fall and screamed in pain thus ending his campaign in Paris then and there. He was on crutches as he came out of the locker room to thank the crowd and announce his forfeit and it was evident that the German would be on the sidelines for a while now and would need surgery.

Having gotten home after the surgery and understanding the timeline for which he will remain out, Zverev in his recent interview with Promiflash, Sascha talked about the absence of his girlfriend Sophia Thomalla by his side while all the care for him was done by his parents Irina Zvereva and Alexander Mikhailovich Zverev. He also talked about his return to action as he now is sure to miss the 2022 Wimbledon Championships and is a major doubt for the 2022 US Open as well.
“In this phase, you want to be around the people you love the most. So it was disappointing for me that Sophia didn’t come. But that’s [how her] job is. My father and mother were there though. couldn’t do anything alone: take a shower, go to the toilet. They took care of me like a little baby. It was so important to me. These two people have helped me the most.
“I won’t be someone who plays after being ready for it for one second. If I play the US Open then to win them and not for one or two rounds. I will only return if I have this form. I don’t know whether it will be the US Open because I would have to play one or two tournaments beforehand. But I haven’t written off New York. There are specialists there who make sure that I can play again as soon as possible,” said Sascha.
With Sascha hinting that he won’t rush his injury, one can expect that the chances of him playing in New York this year are very slim and instead he could return for the final few months of the Tour in the hopes of making a late charge in order to be able to defend his title at the 2022 ATP Finals.
